New Space, Europe: New way to send light vehicles into space.

The company Isar Space innovates in the aerospace sector by proposing new types of rockets allowing the sending of light material like satellites. This new type of rocket is specially designed to optimize the production cost which is 100x lower than the European rockets. This new type of launcher will make it easier to send the next constellations of satellites.

Many European projects regarding the design of micro-launchers are emerging. These new types of spacecraft can carry small satellites into low orbit. This is an opportunity for the old continent to enter the « new space » race.

The objective of these different launchers is to be able to place payloads of up to 150kg at an altitude of about 500km.

This type of launcher allows telephone operators to place their equipment (micro and nano satellites) without waiting for a secondary place in the payloads of large rockets.

This market of small satellites, called « new space », is evolving more and more and is supposed to increase by 4 times for the next years.

Advantages of these small launchers are initially felt at the level of the production cost as well as the cost of the launch of this type of spacecraft (range of 1 million dollars). But the micro-launchers reveal other assets such as the speed of their production thanks to the machining of the parts by 3D printers which are able to make highly complex parts.

It’s now possible to print an engine in about 5 days, 1 day to cool it down and 4 days to integrate it into the rocket. A record time of 10 days for the complete design of a launcher engine.

This innovation was put to the test because it was necessary to obtain a very high level of performance looking at the strong pressure on costs.

Another innovation will allow the launchers to be not harmful for the environment. To do this, companies are working on alternative fuels for their launchers. For example, the company Skyrora has launched one of its rockets with a fuel derived from recycling. Called « Ecosene », this fuel is produced from a treatment by pyrolysis of plastic waste.

Regarding the concrete aspect of this project, the IsarSpace company plans 12 launches per year by 2026. The first take-off would also be planned at the end of 2022.
