Defense

On September the 27th, Thales and Naval Group presented their FDI (Frégate de Defense et d’Intervention – Intervention and Defense Frigates) frigate to the French Navy. This frigate will be equipped with several Thales technologies including the Sea Fire radar.

Sea Fire

The Sea Fire is a multi-function radar equipped with four non-rotating arrays. It uses the long-range 3D surveillance, the horizon search and surface surveillance to provides early warnings against any potential attacks (air or surface threats). This radar can detect 800 objects simultaneously. It will offer a 360-degree coverage at a range of up to 500km in the air and 80km on the surface. The delivery of this radar is planned by the end of 2020. It will be delivered to Naval Group for its FDI frigate.

The Thales radar can offer protection to its host ship but also to the area around the navy vessel.

Remi Mongabure, Thales Multifunction Radar bid director, said: “Sea Fire is like the smartphone of radars. Fully digital and software controlled, it breaks with the past to create the standard of the future.”

The Sea Fire is suitable for all types of corvettes and frigates.

FDI, “the digital shig”:

The first FDI will be deliver to the French Navy in 2023. Then the deliveries will have an 18 months interval until the Navy reach a fleet of five frigates by 2030.

This 122 m length for 4,250 tons weight frigate has been designed for air and sea defensive/ offensive missions.

This FDI will also be equipped with Thales’ communication systems: the COMTICS and the Partner-C.

On the October the 10th, Florence Parly, French Armed Forces (Defence) Minister announced via Twitter that she signed a letter of intent for two FDI frigates with Greece.
