When we know the current geopolitical context of the world, Europe must build a European armed force that is stronger and more united than before. Therefore, the European Commission has decided to invest approximately 205 million euros for future European defense funds. Initially launched in 2017, this investment will concern 16 industrial defense projects, mostly focused on new breakthrough technologies.
The 205 million euros will be used to fund two programs:
The PADR (Preparatory Action for Defense Research) and The EDIDP (European Defence Industrial Development Programme)
These two programs are strategic for Europe and will strengthen its autonomy vis-à-vis the United States, one of the main financiers of European defense.
Since the Cold War era, the United States has played a central role in the protection and defense of Europe by establishing several dozen military bases in the various member countries.
These 16 military industrial projects will demonstrate the European Union’s ability to support the different defense industrial segments of its member states. This strategy will make it possible to achieve results quickly but also to relaunch and accelerate Europe’s defense program.
In concrete terms, these various military industrial projects will involve tactical and stealth military UAVs, low- and high-orbit satellite communications and military technology networks, as well as unmanned military vehicles and, finally, cyber defense systems.
This funding project will have a real positive impact on employment, as 83 SMEs will be involved in the European industrial ecosystem, out of a total of 223 other entities spread across the 24 EU Member States.
Over the past two years, the two pilot programs of the future European Defense Fund have benefited from a total of 590 million euros in the field of defense industrial development (EDIDP project).
These funding projects will represent approximately 440,000 employees who will work for the defense sector, which is, however, heavily impacted by the current health crisis. We know that the European Commission, in launching the major economic recovery program in Europe, has had to partially slow down its action plan for financing common European defense.
