For more than a decade, Italy has been one of the European countries investing the most in renewable energies. In just a few years, Italian solar energy has climbed to second place on the European podium, reaching sixth place in world production in 2019.
A high-potential market that attracts many innovative start-ups, such as Ze Energy.
The year 2021 is off to an ideal start for the Paris-based start-up Ze Energy, specializing in hybrid power plants combining photovoltaics and storage, as it is the lucky winner of the « rapid reserve » call for tenders from the Italian electricity transmission operator TERNA. Thus, the startup has signed its first international contract, demonstrating the relevance of its competitiveness to conquer new markets.
Two storage projects for a total of 10MW in Northern Italy
This fast reserve provision contract covers two hybrid « photovoltaic + storage » projects of 5 MW each. These installations will provide a fast frequency regulation service for 1,000 hours per year over 5 years. That is, nearly 10% of the needs in the central-northern area of Italy. This is the first success of ZE Energy’s hybrid model abroad, in an Italian market that is set to grow. In fact, many thermal capacities will be withdrawn from the market in Italy in the coming years as part of the reduction of CO2 emissions. It is estimated that in 5 years, the need for renewable energy will be even higher in Italy. A boon for startups developing technological innovations in the renewable energy sector such as Ze Energy.
New foreign installations to come
For the first time, the French model of hybrid power plants combining photovoltaic energy and storage will be established outside its borders. A first success that opens the way to future international implementations according to the startup’s CEO, Mathieu Lassagne. Thus, Ze Energy is once again demonstrating its competitiveness and its capacity for technological innovation. By 2025, the startup has set itself the goal of reaching a solar power plant park of more than 700 MW through its deployment in four countries.
